Sea buckthorn oil is a rich, nourishing oil pressed from the bright orange berries of a hardy coastal shrub. It's full of natural carotenoids, the same pigments that colour carrots, which is why it's deep orange. It's used in skincare to soften and nourish dry skin.
Where does sea buckthorn come from?
Sea buckthorn grows wild on coasts and in mountain areas across Europe and Asia, including parts of the UK coastline. Its small berries are packed with oil.
What's the difference between fruit oil and seed oil?
- Fruit (pulp) oil comes from the soft flesh of the berry. It's deep orange and rich in carotenoids and omega-7 fatty acids.
- Seed oil comes from the small seeds. It's paler and higher in omega-3 and omega-6.
Universal Oil uses cold-pressed sea buckthorn fruit pulp oil.
What does sea buckthorn oil do for skin?
- Nourishes and softens dry, rough skin
- Adds richness to lighter oils
- Brings a natural warm colour, with no added dyes
Will sea buckthorn oil stain my skin or clothes?
Used neat, it can tint skin orange for a short time and can stain fabric. In a blend it's diluted, so it's much less likely to colour your skin. It can still mark pale fabrics, so let the oil sink in before you get dressed or put your head on a pillow.
How do you use sea buckthorn oil?
Most people use it as part of a blend rather than on its own, because it's so concentrated. Warm 2–3 drops of a blended oil between your palms and press into damp skin.
Sea buckthorn is one of seven ingredients in Universal Oil, a fragrance free dry oil for face, body, hair and beard. Read about the other six.
