What's in Universal Oil, and why: rosehip, squalane, sea buckthorn and more

Universal Oil has seven ingredients, and every one has a job. Here's what each does, in plain words, and why we chose it.

Squalane

Squalane is a light oil that's very similar to an oil your skin makes itself. That's why it sinks in fast and feels like barely anything. Ours is derived from olives.

Is squalane good for oily skin?

Squalane is lightweight and generally well tolerated by oilier skin, which is why it turns up in so many face oils. Every skin is different, so patch test anything new first.

Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil is pressed from the seeds of wild roses. It's been used for generations on dry, rough skin, and it's one of the most popular face oils around.

Rosehip oil for face, or a blend?

Pure rosehip oil is lovely, but it's one oil doing one job. In Universal Oil, cold-pressed rosehip sits alongside squalane and coco caprylate, so you get its nourishment with a lighter, faster finish that works on face, body and hair.

Sea buckthorn fruit pulp oil

Sea buckthorn oil comes from the bright orange berries of a hardy coastal shrub. It's a rich, nourishing oil, and it gives Universal Oil its warm colour. Because it's so pigmented, it may stain fabrics, so let the oil sink in before you get dressed.

Coco caprylate

Coco caprylate is a light, silky ingredient made from coconut. It's what gives Universal Oil its "dry oil" feel, with no greasy film. What is a dry oil?

High-linoleic sunflower seed oil

This type of sunflower oil is rich in linoleic acid. Oils high in linoleic acid tend to feel light and are generally well tolerated on oilier skin.

Chia seed oil

Chia seed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep skin feeling soft.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Its main job here is to protect the other oils, so they stay fresh for longer.

What's not in it

No fragrance, no essential oils and nothing added just to look good on a label. That's why it also works as an unscented beard oil and a hair oil for dry ends.
